C. David Allis Memorial Session

A Dedicated Session for Trainees

This special session is dedicated to the memory of Professor C. David Allis, a towering figure in the fields of chromatin biology and epigenetics. Known as Dave or David by friends and colleagues, his groundbreaking research illuminated the mechanisms by which chromatin structure and histone modifications regulate gene expression, profoundly transforming our understanding of the dynamic genome.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Allis, assisted by EpiCypher co-founder Dr. Brian Strahl, created the “Histone Code” hypothesis, proposing that the post-translational modifications of histone proteins serve as a complex regulatory language governing chromatin accessibility and gene regulation. His work with histone acetyltransferases (HATs), including identifying transcriptional activator Gcn5 as the prototype, catalyzed a wave of scientific innovation and established a new paradigm in gene regulation.

Dave’s visionary work not only laid the foundation for the epigenetic therapies now revolutionizing cancer treatment but also inspired a generation of scientists to explore the epigenome with ever-increasing depth and precision. He was a generous mentor, a gifted communicator, and a beloved colleague whose intellectual rigor was matched only by his warmth and humility. There exists a special connection between EpiCypher and Dr. Allis, as many of its employees (and two of its co-founders) directly worked for or collaborated closely with him. Dave was dedicated to the education and development of students and post-docs as scientists and future colleagues, and it is in keeping with that spirit that we honor him with this session devoted to the exciting work of bursary-supported trainees.
